American soprano Aundi Marie Moore was recently announced as the 2023 Honoree of the Sphinx Award for Excellence, an acknowledgement of her artistic achievements, her work ethic and her spirit of determination. She quickly established herself as an exceptional talent with her recent appearance as Strawberry Woman in the Metropolitan Opera’s new production of Porgy and Bess last season. American bass-baritone Michael Sumuel, lauded as having “vocals that are smooth and ingratiating” (Daily Camera), will return to the Metropolitan Opera in the 22/23 season, singing Belcore in L’Elisir D’amore. Other debuts include the Father in Blue with English National Opera, Elviro in Xerxes with Detroit Opera, and Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro with Pittsburgh Opera. In concert, Mr. Sumuel will perform Mozart’s Requiem with the Cincinnati Symphony and James Conlon, Bach cantatas BWV 61 and 140 with the Handel and Haydn Society in Boston, open Washington Concert Opera’s season, performing in a gala with soprano Tammy Wilson, and return to Mercury Houston for Handel’s Messiah. Finally, with Pacific Chorale, Mr. Sumuel will take part in a European tour, performing in Haydn’s Nelson Mass and Florence Price’s Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight.
Last season, Michael Sumuel made his debut as Jesus in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with LA Opera, a semi-staged production conducted by James Conlon with choreography by the Hamburg Ballet, Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro with Seattle Opera, Escamillo in Carmen for his debut with The Santa Fe Opera, a concert of arias to open The Dallas Opera season, the King in Massenet’s Cinderella with the Metropolitan Opera, Leporello in Don Giovanni with Opera San Antonio and Escamillo with Chicago Opera Theater. Claudio Monteverdi
The Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) is one of music history’s great transitional figures, bridging the gap between the Renaissance and the Baroque. In his Vespers, he set out to demonstrate his mastery of both the older style of composition, centered on the technique of cantus firmus, with Gregorian chant providing a musical foundation, and the new style that was coming into being, incorporating dance rhythms and lively counterpoint over a basso continuo.
The Vespers requires musicians who are highly skilled at playing instruments like the cornetto, sackbut, and theorbo* that have fallen out of general use since 1610, for which we are fortunate to have excellent partners in Bach Collegium San Diego and Tesserae Baroque! The music notation of the period was very different from that we know today, so performing editions must be prepared so that today’s musicians can read them.
In addition, like most composers of his day, Monteverdi used a sort of shorthand when writing instrumental music that did not always specify which instruments are meant to be playing. Therefore, every performance of the Vespers you may hear will differ from all the others, as these decisions are left up to each conductor to make.

*A cornett or cornetto (plural cornetti) is a conical, usually curved, instrument made of wood or ivory with a mouthpiece like a brass instrument but keyholes like a flute. A theorbo (seen in the header image above, courtesy of Bach Collegium San Diego) is a type of lute notable for its very long neck. Sackbuts appear the most familiar to us, as they are the precursors of the modern trombone and very similar in appearance.

The presence of erotic selections from the Song of Songs in the context of a church service has been given as support for the theory that the Vespers (or at least these portions of it) was composed to be performed at the 1608 wedding between the Duke of Mantua’s eldest son and Margaret of Savoy—a lavish week-long social event at which the Duke, a notable patron of the arts, might have been expected to showcase the work of Monteverdi, his court composer.

In 1610 Monteverdi supervised the printing of a special edition of the Vespers, and dedicated it to Pope Paul V in hopes of winning the pontiff’s patronage. However, the audience he sought never took place. Three years later, having been dismissed from Mantua after the Duke’s death, he found a new job as maestro di cappella at the Basilica of San Marco in Venice, where he would remain the rest of his life. The newly printed edition of the Vespers must have proven to be quite an effective tool to Monteverdi in auditioning for this prestigious position!

She is a graduate of the University of California, Irvine with a B.A. in Drama and is a choral music enthusiast!
She currently sings with and serves on the board of the Long Beach Chorale and Chamber Orchestra, and participated in the Pacific Chorale’s Choral Festival in 2022. Thelma also enjoys volunteering and giving back to her community. She is currently a part of the prestigious Leadership Long Beach program which engages and challenges community leaders to make a difference in the city. For fun, Thelma enjoys playing guitar, writing pop songs, and spending time with her rescue dog Rory.

COSTA MESA, CA (February 6, 2023) – Grammy-winning Pacific Chorale, whose performances have been hailed as “ethereal” (LA Opus), “thrilling” and “sublime” (Classical Voice), will embark on its first international tour in seven years, taking its artistry to leading venues in Austria, Germany, and the United Kingdom from July 12-24, 2023. Artistic Director Robert Istad will conduct all five of the tour performances. The Orange County, California-based chorus performs, alongside several regional orchestras, two works from the choir’s season finale, including the European premiere of Price’s rediscovered masterwork, Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight, and Haydn’s Nelson Mass. Joining the Chorale on tour are celebrated soloists soprano Aundi Marie Moore, applauded for “her vivid, rich voice” (Washington Classical Review), and bass-baritone Michael Sumuel, lauded for his “luminous tone and theatrical presence” (San Francisco Chronicle). This marks Istad’s first tour with Pacific Chorale.
The choir’s tour launches with back-to-back performances with the noted Freies Landesorchester Bayern (Free State Orchestra of Bavaria) in two iconic venues: Salzburg, Austria’s Salzburg Cathedral, which holds one of Austria’s most important music archives (July 15, 2023), and Munich, Germany’s Kirche St. Joseph, distinguished for its Baroque revival architecture (July 16). Pacific Chorale next travels to the UK, appearing with Bath Philharmonia, one of the country’s leading orchestras, at Oxford University’s Sheldonian Theatre (July 19), and Bath Abbey, in the World Heritage City of Bath (July 21). The tour concludes with the chorale’s performance with the acclaimed Bournemouth Symphony Chorus and Orchestra at Salisbury Cathedral, which houses one of only four original copies of the Magna Carta known to exist, in Salisbury, located near Stonehenge in the county of Wiltshire (July 22).
“We are thrilled to, once again, share with audiences abroad the extraordinary artistry of Pacific Chorale live in concert, especially with a musical program of such significance,” says Istad. “Although composed in vastly different times in reaction to vastly different circumstances on separate continents, both Florence Price’s long-lost choral masterwork, Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight, and Haydn’s enduring tour de force, the Nelson Mass, convey powerful and profound messages of humanity that are as relevant today as they were when they were composed. I am deeply moved to conduct these particular works on what will be my first-ever tour with Pacific Chorale.”
About the Tour Program
The tour program replicates the program on the Chorale’s season finale on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa, CA, during which Istad will lead the West Coast premiere of the choral-orchestral version of groundbreaking composer Florence Price’s newly discovered Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight, a setting of Springfield, Illinois-native Vachel Lindsay’s ardent anti-war poem of the same title. The long-lost manuscript by Price, one of the first Black American women to be widely recognized as a significant American composer, was recovered from an abandoned house in Illinois in 2009 and is thought to have been completed between 1914 and 1949. Her work will be paired with Haydn’s masterpiece Missa in Angustiis (Mass for Troubled Times) “Nelson Mass,” composed in 1798, at a time of tremendous turmoil when the citizens of Austria feared defeat by Napoleon’s troops. These works, although grounded in the new and old worlds respectively and composed more than a century apart, both address the futility of war. The Chorale will also host its annual Gala immediately following the concert, to celebrate and benefit the upcoming European tour.
The Price work will also feature the solo voices of noted American singers Aundi Marie Moore, soprano, and Michael Sumuel, bass-baritone. This marks Moore’s second appearance with Pacific Chorale, having previously performed in the choir’s presentation of the West Coast premiere of Damien Geter’s Cantata for a More Hopeful Tomorrow in 2021.

ROBERT ISTAD, a Grammy Award-winning conductor who “fashions fluent and sumptuous readings” (Voice of OC) with his “phenomenal” artistry (Los Angeles Times), was appointed Pacific Chorale’s Artistic Director in 2017. Under his leadership, the chorus continues to expand its reputation for excellence for delivering fresh, thought-provoking interpretations of beloved masterworks, rarely performed gems and newly commissioned pieces. His artistic impact can be heard on two recent recordings featuring Pacific Chorale, including the 2020 Grammy Award-winning “Mahler’s Eighth Symphony” with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Gustavo Dudamel on Deutsche Grammophon (2021), for which he prepared the chorus. It won Best Choral Performance and also garnered a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album, Classical. Additionally, Istad conducted the Pacific Chorale’s recording “All Things Common: The Music of Tarik O’Regan” released on Yarlung Records (2020). Istad has prepared choruses for such renowned conductors as Esa-Pekka Salonen, John Williams, John Mauceri, Keith Lockhart, Nicholas McGegan, Vasilly Sinaisky, Sir Andrew Davis, Bramwell Tovey, Carl St.Clair, Eugene Kohn, Giancarlo Guerrero, Marin Alsop, George Fenton, and Robert Moody. He regularly conducts and collaborates with Pacific Symphony, Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra, Sony Classical Records, Yarlung Records, Berkshire Choral International, and Long Beach Symphony Orchestra. An esteemed educator, Istad is Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies at California State University, Fullerton, where he was recognized as CSUF’s 2016 Outstanding Professor of the Year. He conducts the University Singers and manages a large graduate conducting program, in addition to teaching courses on conducting and performance practice. COSTA MESA, CA (January 4, 2023) – The Grammy Award-winning Pacific Chorale, led by Artistic Director Robert Istad, is holding auditions for singers in the alto, tenor and bass sections for entry in the ensemble’s 2023-24 season. (The choir’s soprano section is currently balanced.) Singers can apply online at https://www.pacificchorale.org/auditions/. The audition application is brief, and there is no cost to apply. Applications must be submitted no later than 5 pm on January 25, 2023. Singers must possess a high level of musical and vocal ability, and experience in ensemble singing is essential. All new singers admitted to Pacific Chorale must be fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19.
In-person auditions will be scheduled in February on a first-applied, first-served basis. Pacific Chorale, considered among the nation’s leading choirs, is the resident choir at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, California.

Pacific Chorale opened our 55th season with a very special program in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, Costa Mesa on October 15, 2022. Beginning with an angelic sounding Duruflé’s Requiem, and closing with a stimulating work of Hagen’s The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci, Artistic Director Robert Istad once again took listeners on an exquisite and uplifting journey with the sounds of Pacific Chorale.

On October 8, 2022, Pacific Chorale had the pleasure of performing two pieces for Orange County Museum of Art’s 24-hour grand opening in their beautiful new permanent home!

Zoe came from South Korea to do her masters in choral conducting at University of Louisville, then went on to U. of Kentucky to do her DMA. She is now the Music Director at Young Nak Church in L.A. An excellent musician and a lovely person, and we are delighted to have her on the team!

On behalf of everyone at Pacific Chorale, we are deeply saddened to share the news that Emeritus Board member Vina Williams passed away in the early hours September 27, 2022.
Vina has been a stalwart member of the Pacific Chorale family since 1969. She was a frequent featured soprano soloist, a Board member for multiple terms, and continued to sing as a member of the Chorale for many decades. A fierce and generous advocate for classical music and artists, she underwrote multiple Chorale concerts, chaired our Gala fundraiser three times, and was instrumental in the establishment of our Encore Society for planned giving. In 2014 we recognized Vina’s many contributions to the Chorale and to Orange County’s musical culture by awarding her the Entrepreneur in the Arts Award.
Our thoughts go out to her husband Tom, son Craig, and to all Vina’s loving family and friends.
A memorial service, open to all family and friends, will be held on Saturday, October 29 at 1pm in Grace Lutheran Church, 6931 Edinger Avenue, Huntington Beach, CA 92647.
