Requiescat in Pace: Janice Johnson

Pacific Chorale joins the Orange County arts community in remembering Janice Johnson, a devoted arts advocate, former music teacher, and beloved member of the Pacific Chorale family.

A vital figure in Orange County music history, Janice served on Pacific Chorale’s Board of Directors for 22 years, helping shape and strengthen the organization through decades of growth. Upon her retirement from the Board at the end of the 2018–19 season, she was honored with the title of Director Emeritus in recognition of her extraordinary service, leadership, and dedication. She also received Pacific Chorale’s Entrepreneur in the Arts Award, celebrating her advocacy and support for music, music education, and the cultural life of our region.

Janice believed deeply in the power of music to enrich lives and open doors for young people. As a former music teacher, she understood firsthand the confidence, creativity, discipline, and connection that can take root when students are given meaningful opportunities to sing and learn. Her commitment to Pacific Chorale’s education programs reflected that belief, helping make choral music more accessible to the next generation.

Her generosity also created a lasting legacy within the Chorale itself. Janice endowed Pacific Chorale’s Tenor Chair in honor of her late husband, Roger W. Johnson, ensuring that his memory would continue to be celebrated through the human voice and the artistry of the ensemble she so deeply cherished.

Her impact extended far beyond Pacific Chorale. Janice was a longtime leader and supporter of many of Orange County’s most important cultural institutions, including Pacific Symphony, Segerstrom Center for the Arts, South Coast Repertory, and the Laguna Art Museum, among others. Through her vision, generosity, and tireless advocacy, she helped strengthen the artistic landscape of Orange County in lasting ways.

Janice’s connection to choral music was deeply personal as well. Among her happiest musical memories, she recalled singing in the choir at Irvine United Church of Christ when Pacific Chorale Artistic Director Robert Istad served as music director. That lifelong love of singing, teaching, and community remained at the heart of her work as an arts champion.

Pacific Chorale is deeply grateful for Janice Johnson’s decades of service, generosity, and belief in the transformative power of music. Her legacy lives on in the students, singers, artists, and audiences touched by the programs and institutions she helped champion.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Janice’s family, friends, and all who were fortunate to know her.
